WebGL technology was utilized to create a 3D representation showcasing the extensive historical background of İzmir, spanning from the Neolithic age to the pre-modern era.
İzmir Development Agency, a public institution that develops tools to mobilize local potential for the sustainable development of İzmir, has partnered with us to create one of the most daring cultural heritage projects ever made. We proposed a website that users can navigate inside the 3D content, even with VR headsets.
We definitely had to work with the right people, as the project span spanned 8,500 years of history through the ages. For this, we came together with the archaeology professors who led the excavations in Izmir, art historians and architects who are experts in historical architecture.
We modeled more than 200 lost historical buildings by analyzing postcards and vintage photographs. We exported them to web via WebGL.
The website, which we published after 18 months of work, was met with great interest in local and international media.
